Many areas of Charleston can boast of amenities like fine dining, exciting retail and picturesque views. However, there’s one area that claim the best of everything: Downtown Charleston.
From the Old Historic Market to the boutiques of King Street, unique dining experiences and club life along East Bay, the historical and cultural opportunities at every turn, downtown living is Charleston at its most authentic.
It’s hard to sum up downtown Charleston living in a few words or phrases. It’s more than a collection of attractions and amenities - it’s the sights and sounds of daily life that make downtown Charleston living a unique experience. It is a gentle breeze coming off of the harbor. It is the sound of a horse drawn carriage passing by your window. It is a walk down a quiet side street, peering through wrought iron gates into perfectly manicured private gardens.Of course, you will find different degrees of history, romance, and urban hustle depending on which downtown neighborhood you choose. These neighborhoods include:
South of Broad
South of Broad, located at the end of Charleston’s peninsula, includes Rainbow Row, the Battery, and White Point Gardens. It is a neighborhood of elaborate mansions restored to their original antebellum glory, complete with meticulously manicured gardens, and postcard views of Charleston Harbor.
Ansonborough
Ansonborough was one Charleston’s first suburbs outside of the original city walls. Hundreds of Charleston single and double houses, townhouses and condos huddle alongside local attractions like the South Carolina Aquarium and an entertainment complex including an IMAX theater. Once a forgotten slum, Ansonborough is now a vibrant neighborhood whose decades-long renaissance has become a true urban success story.
Harleston Village
Another early Charleston suburb, Harleston Village grew along the western side of the peninsula. Located near MUSC and the College of Charleston, Harleston Village is home to a large student, medical and professional population. There is no end to the entertainment and dining options you can enjoy along Calhoun and Upper King Streets, among others. In Harleston Village you can find a wide range of architectural styles, including Georgian, Greek Revival, and Victorian, as well as more contemporary styles.
French Quarter
The French Quarter is a culturally and historically significant neighborhood of Colonial brick and stucco houses radiating outward from the intersection of Queen and East Bay Streets. Always known as a center of cultural life in Charleston, the French Quarter includes the historic Dock Street Theater, home of many of the city’s annual Spoleto performances. Several art galleries, boutiques and restaurants line Broad Street, a main artery that lies within walking distance of the Quarter.
