Upper King Street: A Bit of Everything Charleston Has to Offer!
| By: PremiereCharleston.com Staff Editor | 02/02/2010 |
PremiereCharleston.com has a mission: to highlight the many facets of Charleston living, including shopping, dining, history, real estate, culture, and so on. We do this as a service to not only the tourist from far over the horizon, but also for those folks who live 20 minutes away, but somehow never make the trip.
So we had this intensely super-genius idea to break down the Downtown Charleston area into its many parts, and give the reader an idea of what’s going on there, both in general terms and, as you will see, quite specific.
Today, we take you to Upper King Street. Bordered to the south by Calhoun Street, the Upper King area has been steadily pushing northward in the past several years. Of course, just like real estate everywhere, development and rehabbing has slowed recently.
Regardless, Upper King thrives as a Downtown Charleston hotspot, partly due to the variety of activities available. Other parts of town may be known as the antiquing area, the art gallery area, the dining area, etc., but Upper King Street truly offers a bit of everything. This includes a wide variety of dining options, bars and clubs, retail of every kind, and varied cultural offerings. If Upper King has a claim on any one theme, it may be as Charleston’s “design district.” As you will see in the list below, Upper King Street features a concentration of design, architecture, furniture, kitchen and bath businesses - both commercial and residential.
So, if your impression of Upper King Street is hundreds of college kids sunbathing in Marion Square (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) get ready to have your mind blown. Dining, nightlife, retail and culture await you on Charleston’s Upper King Street!
